Frequently Asked Questions

What inspired me to write my first book was that it was based on a true story. I was married to the real-life Mr. Bob and for years he would do things to try to make me laugh and one of them was telling these corny jokes. I didn’t think the jokes were funny but his behavior while telling the jokes made me laugh. I teasingly said to him, “I’m going to write a book about you and these corny jokes.” He thought it was a great idea. One day I watched him and our children going back-and-forth repeating these ridiculous jokes and suddenly I was inspired to get a pen and pad and started writing. One hour later, Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes was born

On its surface, most people will expect the book to be just about jokes but it’s more than that. Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes is very much about a family’s dynamic. How they relate to each other and accept one another’s differences. It’s funny, relatable, charming and based on a true story. It inspires young and older ones to do their part in making their family life the best it can be.

My favorite scene in Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes is when Mr. Bob chases Ms. Carol into BJ’s bedroom, still telling jokes while she’s trying to wake him up. Ms. Carol’s ‘are you serious?’ look is iconic, especially since Mr. Bob is too busy laughing hysterically at his own corny jokes to even notice. That moment just perfectly sums up the book’s charm.

Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes truly delights readers of all ages. Children are drawn to Mr. Bob’s hilarious antics and lovable personality, brought to life by the wonderful illustrations. For adults, the book resonates on a deeper level; its relatable moments spark reflection and offer a heartwarming reminder of valuable life lessons, making it a joy for the whole family.

Here are a few gems from Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes

– Ultimately, I want to leave readers with this friendly but powerful reminder: start your day with intention and set a positive tone early. When inevitable challenges surface, simply pausing to acknowledge what’s good can drastically change your mood and carry you through.

– I want readers to see that family closeness isn’t about grand gestures or money; it’s built in the simple, free gift of time together, however brief.

– My hope is that readers discover the power of celebrating their own uniqueness, much like Mr. Bob did with his corny jokes. This was only possible due to the strong support in the Dewavery home. His wife, though not always amused, fully accepted him for who he was, never blocking his authentic joy. For her, his happiness and harmlessness were all that mattered to her

Honestly, writing Mr. Bob’s Corny Jokes was anything but challenging; it practically wrote itself! The greatest joy was reliving all the hilarious, corny jokes my husband used to tell, even the ones that didn’t make it into the book. Seeing how much fun readers have with Mr. Bob is incredibly rewarding, and it’s precisely that enjoyment that inspired me to create the spin-off series based on even more of my family’s adventures

When I married Mr. Bob, my last name was Avery. I just combined my new name,
Dewindt, with Avery and came up with the name Dewavery

Actually, writing Aint You Tired? was the easy part. Deciding what to include was not
so easy. Ultimately, I decided to pen what would be beneficial to the reader, relatable on some
level, and interesting. This book was years in the making. Having to recall painful events was
challenging but the process was ultimately cathartic and healing.

I get asked this question often. I never plan to write a book. I don’t believe that I am
creative enough to write fiction. Because I only write what I know or have experience, I need to
be inspired to do so and I never know when that’s going to happen.
